Cradle to Grave
Texas Medicine
By Steve Witt

There’s a bit of an off-kilter methodology to the recurring waves of throwback metal that, at times, makes us confused as to what we’re listening to. Made possible due to the Timbaland of thrash, Devin Townsend, Cradle to Grave’s sophomore effort is the newest of old school. Texas Medicine has all the well-blended elements of the power metal and thrash you love but with a contemporary sound owing to a particularly punishing modern drum sound and Townsend’s weird way of making his way through a mix. The band keep the pace throughout Texas Medicine, except for a couple of brief deviations to the world of ill-advised acoustic ballads, such as “Daughters,” in which an entire track is dedicated to a washy, off-time bout of sensitive guitar meandering. Despite this, Texas Medicine has the potential to be a favourite with long-time head-bangers, with a huge, driving sound not unlike the metal gods of old. (Year of the Sun)

’80s metal pioneer Willie Basse has launched his new label New Empire Media with the release of his new album “The Money Grind”. The LP is now available in stores and on iTunes, with a European release slated for September, followed by a European a tour in October/November 2008.

Basse is best known for his role as bassist/frontman for the legendary L.A.-based metalheads BLACK SHEEP (the metal version, not the rap version who bought the name from him in the ’90s). BLACK SHEEP and Willie Basse were mainstays on the Los Angeles sunset strip during the ’80s metal explosion. The group has boasted members that reportedly include Slash, Paul Gilbert, James Kottak, Randy Castillo and Mitch Perry.

Staying true to his his metal and rock roots, Basse flexes his abilities as a songwriter on “The Money Grind” with 12 ear-crunching, classic metal songs that will bring him back to the forefront of the genre.

“The term classic metal doesn’t really make sense to me,” says Basse when describing his new album, “because that implies that there isn’t anything current about metal music, which isn’t true. Alternative, grunge, punk, emo, etc. — they all have their basis in the same metal music that I’ve been playing for years.’

Despite taking a hiatus to pursue real estate, Basse has remained active during his absence from the music scene. In addition to his own label, Willie has built several state of the art recording studio facilities. He’s worked for years as a pro audio equipment specialist and technology consultant.

SIX ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE OF ‘BETWEEN THE WARNING AND THE WAR” FEATURING GUEST APPEARANCES BY MEMBERS OF SUICIDAL TENDENCIES AND STATIC-X
***

Huntington Beach, CA’s SiX have announced the release of their new album “Between The War and the Warning”. The album, which features guest appearances by Mike Clark from Suicidal Tendencies and bassist Tony Campos from Static-X, will be released independently through the group’s own 1605 Records.

“Tony and Mike were a blessing to this project. After rocking out to one of our rough demos he got from a mutual friend, Mike wanted to meet us. That meeting turned into partying in Hermosa Beach over Tecates and Tequilla. By the end of the night he and his homie destroyed his coffee table, moshing to ‘The Day I Died’. He came into the studio and just man-handled the guitar. I’ve never seen a guy rip like that so effortlessly,” says frontman Lauren Boquette. “Tony and I go way back to my days in Drown. We knew he was a monster on the bass and when it came time to track bass parts, I sent him ‘The Day I Died’ and ‘Warning’ knowing they would be right up his alley. He came in and within 2 hours the bass lines were on fire, he killed it.”

Formed in 2001, SiX has been punishing the hard rock scene on their own terms with a fierce independent mindset that allows them to record and tour on their own terms. Comprised of members of alt-metal act Drown and former touring members of Cypress Hill and OPM, the group’s previous release “The Price of Faith” received strong reaction from radio and prompted Amp Magazine to say SiX “combine the modern day crossover metal of Machine Head, Metallica, and Fear Factory with classic influences such as Sabbath, Priest, and Maiden.” Since then the group has done hundreds of shows, touring the country and sharing stages with Clutch, GWAR, Slipknot, Disturbed, Shadows Fall, Stone Sour and countless others.

Mike Clark states, “SiX is the only band that I’ve come across that could pick up where Suicidal left off. This is some hard, real, west coast shit”.

Thanks to main sponsor Jagermiester, committed friends in the underground, and an unrelenting work ethic, SiX continues to infect the nation with their brand of aggression.

“This is the best album I’ve ever made. After living in a van for the past 5 years building SiX, we put everything we are into this one,” says Lauren. “Every drop of blood and every mile traveled. You want to hear a very hungry band that is out to destroy the world? Just push play!”

The band has recently uploaded three tracks from the album, including the band’s new single “The Day I Died”, at the group’s MySpace site www.myspace.com/six

MOWER JOINS DIECAST TOUR WHILE “ROAD RAGE” HEATS UP SIRIUS’
DEVIL’S DOZEN
COUNTDOWN 7 WEEKS IN A ROW
*******

Mower has been added to the upcoming Diecast tour starting in Cleveland, OH on November 13th through the December 8th show in Farmington, NM.
“Thanks to Diecast for taking Mower out of Southern California for a little while.  It’s just not safe here anymore with all the drunken actresses driving around with no panties on. We need to get the hell out of here now.  If I see one more hot blonde with big breasts in a convertible, I’m going to throw up. Actually, that was a lie, I just made that up to make this release more interesting,” laughs says Mower frontman Brian Sheerin. “Seriously though, this Diecast tour is a gift and we’re really thankful for the dates. Mower needed a good heavy tour and now we’ve got one.”
Mower is touring in support of their sophomore album “Not For You”, which was produced by Invitro guitarist Mikey Doling. The album’s lead single “Road Rage” has become one of the most requested tracks on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Hard Attack with Jose Mangin, where the track routinely charts each week alongside bands like Down, As I Lay Dying, Machine Head, DevilDriver and Megadeth. The video for “Road Rage” was directed by Dale Resteghini (HATEBREED, SHADOWS FALL) and can be viewed at the following location: www.one.revver.com/watch/89187

Genre benders What’s He Building In There have announced tour dates in support of their recently released Year of The Sun self-titled debut album. The band will play throughout Eastern Canada in the month of October including dates in Halifax, NS, Liverpool, NS and Trois-Rivieres, QC.

In keeping with the haunting Tom Waits composition that spawned their name, What’s He Building In There have ripened their own deranged fruit in the form of their debut self-titled LP. Drawing influence from the contrasting musical worlds of Mike Patton, Tool, Les Claypool, Between the Buried and Me, Frank Zappa and many other innovators, WHBIT have synthesized their many facets into one gripping and demented melodic masterpiece. Clocking in at just over 54 minutes, this self-produced saga will dash the preconceptions of heavy music listeners everywhere.

The group’s debut album has received critical acclaim from Ultimate Guitar.com who said, “While other metal bands release epic albums about ancient heroes and gods, What Is He Building In There are writing their own story and it turns to be as fascinating as a computer game. The album is very carefully played from the technical side and the musicians are surely professional.” While Tangible Sounds described the band best when they stated, “Mixing almost every possible genre and instrument you can think of, WHBIT creates a sort of audio psychosis that totally envelopes and surrounds the listener like a straight jacket.”

If Mike Patton took over writing duties for Between the Buried and Me it just might sound like this oddly named band. Fans of everything from The Dillinger Escape Plan to Faith No More to Between the Buried and Me should enjoy this one. – Unbound Magazine
